Burst Pipe: What to Do Before the Plumber Arrives
The first five minutes matter more than anything we do after we arrive. Here's the order of operations.
Do this immediately
- Shut off the main water valve — know its location before an emergency happens
- Cut power to the affected area if water is anywhere near outlets or panels
- Open a nearby faucet to relieve remaining pressure in the line
While you wait
Photograph the damage for your insurance claim, move furniture and valuables away from standing water, and avoid contact with any water near electrical outlets or appliances.
Call us the moment it happens — even mid-emergency we can walk you through the shutoff by phone if you can't find the valve.

Where is my main shutoff valve?
Usually near the water meter at the street side of the house, or where the line enters the home. Find it now, before an emergency.
Should I try to patch it myself?
A temporary pipe clamp can buy time, but it’s not a fix — the pressure will find the next weak point.
Is a burst pipe covered by insurance?
Often yes for the water damage; check your policy. We can document the failure for your claim.
