Water Smells Like Sulfur: Causes & Fixes

That rotten-egg smell has a couple of usual suspects — and a fix for each.

Where the smell comes from

If the smell is only from the hot water tap, it's almost always the water heater's anode rod reacting with bacteria in the tank — a heater problem, not a whole-house one. If it's in both hot and cold water, it's usually hydrogen sulfide from the well or groundwater source itself.

Matching the fix to the cause

A heater-only smell is usually solved by replacing the anode rod with a different alloy, or a full tank flush. A whole-house smell needs an oxidizing filter or aeration system sized to the sulfur level in your specific water.

When to Call a Pro

Testing whether it's a heater issue or a source issue takes minutes and saves you from buying the wrong fix.

FAQ

Is sulfur-smelling water safe to use?

Usually yes for bathing and washing, though the taste and smell make it unpleasant to drink. We can confirm with a test.

Will bleaching the tank fix it permanently?

It often helps temporarily, but the smell tends to return without addressing the anode rod or source.

Is this the same as sewer smell?

No — sewer odor usually points to a dry drain trap or venting issue, a different problem entirely.
