The rough-in is the part of a bathroom nobody sees and everybody pays for twice if it is wrong. It is the valve, the lines feeding it and the outlets leaving it — set at the right height and depth, braced, pressure-tested and photographed before the wall closes.

PEX-A is joined by expanding the end of the pipe, slipping it over the fitting and letting it shrink back onto it. No solvent, no flame, and the pipe grips the fitting as it returns to size. It also bends around obstacles instead of needing an elbow at every turn, which means fewer joints buried inside a wall.
What we set at rough-in decides what the finished bathroom can be: the valve height, how far the valve body sits from the finished wall surface, where the tub spout drop lands, and how many outlets the valve can feed. Get the depth wrong and the trim will not sit flat on the tile — which is only discovered after the tile is on.
Every valve has a range for how deep it may sit behind the finished surface — the plaster guard on the front of the valve is the gauge for it. We set the valve against the finished wall thickness the tile setter is going to build, not against the bare stud.
Heights come from how the bathroom will be used: valve within reach from outside the tub, spout drop above the rim, head outlet high enough for the tallest person in the house. These are set once and set with the customer, before anything is closed.
