How to Make Your Water Heater Last Longer
Most water heaters die years early from the same few preventable causes. None of this is complicated.
Annual maintenance
- Flush the tank yearly to clear sediment before it hardens
- Check the anode rod every 2–3 years — it corrodes so your tank doesn't
- Set the thermostat to 120°F: hot enough for comfort, not wasteful
The two upgrades that matter most
A water softener is the single biggest factor in how long a heater lasts in our hard water. An expansion tank protects against pressure spikes on closed systems — required by code in most cases, and cheap insurance against a burst tank.
If your heater is under 5 years old and already showing scale or rust-colored water, hard water is almost certainly the cause — not a defective unit.

How often should I flush my water heater?
Once a year in our hard water — twice a year without a softener.
What does the anode rod actually do?
It corrodes instead of your tank, sacrificially protecting the steel. Once it’s gone, the tank starts rusting.
Is it worth adding a softener just for the water heater?
Often yes — a softener roughly doubles the working life of tank and tankless units alike in our water.
