Whole-House Filtration: A Homeowner's Guide

Sediment, chlorine, iron, sulfur — each needs a different media. Here's how to think about choosing.

The filter types that matter

Sediment filters catch sand and rust particles — usually the first stage. Carbon filters remove chlorine taste and odor. Iron and sulfur need oxidizing media or air injection systems, not a basic carbon filter, to work properly.

Sizing it to your water

A generic under-sink filter won't touch a whole-house iron or sulfur problem — it needs a system sized to your flow rate and the specific contaminant level, confirmed by a water test rather than a guess.

FAQ

How often do filter media need replacing?

Sediment and carbon stages typically every 6–12 months; iron/sulfur media varies by usage and severity.

Will filtration lower my water pressure?

A properly sized system shouldn’t. Undersized filters are the usual cause of pressure loss after installation.

Do I need filtration if I’m on city water?

Often yes for chlorine taste/odor — well water adds iron and sulfur to the list of things worth filtering.
