A gas tankless water heater is three jobs in one: the water connections, the gas piping to the unit, and the vent that carries exhaust outside. We do the plumbing and the gas piping ourselves, so the three are planned together.

A gas tankless unit fires a burner only while hot water is running. To do that it needs a gas line sized for its full burner demand — often larger than the line that fed an old tank heater. At the heater we fit a shutoff and a drip leg (sediment trap) so debris in the line settles out before it reaches the gas valve.
Exhaust has to leave the building. The units in our photos vent through PVC pipe, which is what their design allows. Below the heater goes an isolation valve kit so the heat exchanger can be flushed of scale without disconnecting anything.

Usually, but the existing gas line and vent are rarely right for it. A tankless burner needs more gas while running, and the venting is different. We check both before quoting.
A short capped pipe below the tee that feeds the heater. Moisture and debris in the gas line fall into it instead of travelling into the heater's gas valve.
Hard water leaves scale inside the heat exchanger. A softener or scale treatment slows that down, and the isolation valve kit lets the heater be flushed. Both of our gas tankless jobs here are in homes that also have water treatment.
